Fans got a glimpse of Mariah Carey's fourteenth studio album (fifteenth if the "Glitter" soundtrack is included) on September 13, when "GTFO" was released as a buzz single. The song, produced by Mariah and Nineteen85, sampled Porter Robinson's 2014 "Goodbye To A World."

"With You," produced by Mariah and DJ Mustard, was released as the album's lead single on October 4, 2018. Other tracks made available before the album's release were "The Distance," featuring rapper Ty Dolla $ing, and "A No No," which sampled Lil Kim's 1997 hit "Crush On You."

"Caution" was released on November 16, 2018 and debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 after selling over 51,000 copies in the US, becoming Mariah's eighteenth top-ten album.

The Japanese physical edition of the album featured a bonus track, "Runway," which samples Mariah's 1997 "Butterfly" song. The digital edition features a different version of the same song, featuring Japanese rapper KOHH.
